Essay: scientists have a responsibility to discuss climate change

An important statement by a leading climate researcher, Alan Betts https://alanbetts.com/research/paper/communicating-climate-science/   “Earth scientists face a profound ethical challenge. Humanity is an integral part of the Earth’s ecosystem, but the waste from our industrial society is now driving rapid global climate change. What is our responsibility as a community of scientists? Is it simply to follow tradition and explore and discuss in our own world, largely isolated from the broader community, the many interesting facets and complexities of the transformation of the Earth’s climate system and then to publish our results in our private jargon in copyrighted journals that are…

Water Wonk notices TRE

Michael “Aquadoc” Campana, of OSU — one of the most influential bloggers on H2O — took notice of my sparring with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, and says he might review “Ripple” sometime soon.  Though this is a book for the general public (and features the Doc briefly), I look forward to his learned comments: https://aquadoc.typepad.com/waterwired/2011/06/alex-prudhomme.html

Alex vs. Jon Stewart re. Water

Jon taunts, Alex parries, and we agree that 40 years after the Clean Water Act and the founding of the EPA, “the fate of freshwater this century does not look good.”  Then Jon steals my mug of clean, cold H2O — “I’m not hoarding,” he *claims* … Check out the interview: https://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-june-13-2011/alex-prud-homme

US Drought Map

The Climate Prediction Center has a map showing the outlook for drought conditions in the US. The map covers the period from June 3rd to August 31st 2011. I dedicate a whole section of The Ripple Effect to drought, in the US and around the world.

Best Business Crime Writing of the Year (2002)

by James Surowiecki Editor Description  A year ago it would have been difficult to conceive of an anthology of stories soley devoted to corporate malfeasance. Today, the challenge has been to keep it confined to one volume. From P.J. O’Rourke’s hilarious “How To Stuff A Wild Enron,” in which he compares trying to understand Enron’s finances to trying to buy an airline ticket at the best price, to Marc Peyser’s’s perceptive look at that American institution, Martha Stewart, to Joe Nocera’s investigation of how it all went wrong, the stories here are sometimes infuriating, often entertaining, and invariably informative. Best Business…

Best American Crime Writing

By Otto Penzler, Thomas H. Cook, Nicholas Pileggi A riveting new anthology series–a year’s worth of the most powerful, the most startling, the most astute and smartest, in short, the best crime journalism. Included in this first volume are Mark Singer’s “The Chicken Warriors” from The New Yorker: an up-close look at the tawdry, wildly popular, illegal world of cock-fighting; E. Jean Carrol’s “The Cheerleaders” fromSpin: the story of how an idyllic town–the model for Bedford Falls in It’s a Wonderful Life–was ravaged by murders, rapes, and suicides; and David McClintick’s “Fatal Bondage” from Vanity Fair: the tale of a grifter with an…
